For years I'd used Evernote but was realizing a lot of problems with it. So I was researching alternatives and came upon Node Research, Obsidian, and the ZettelKasten method. ![[Pasted image 20210608003019.png]] If you look at this mind map, you can see that there are visible areas of interest and notes build off of those, as he writes, he creates backlinks to new subjects, and eventually can visually see where the holes in his knowledge are. So rather than writing notes that get used and forgotten, he's building on existing knowledge base that he can refer back to as he continues learning. In the writing of notes, you have to be aware of the methodology, which is similar to these spider notes. Topic Index > Central Topic > Idea > Sub Idea And instead of formatting them with a program, you write in Markdown and create your own templates to reuse and structure the information. ### Note type identifiers After watching one of Brian's videos, I emulated his style and created [[⚑ Types of Notes]] with an array of templates which are all slightly different. They should all aid in the creation of various topics. I'm starting to think maybe I should change the note type indicator for topics to something else, since it seems it gets used so often. Maybe switch `!` and `*`? Or leave indicators off of topics? ### Notes on formatting - I think that a basic Zettelkasten note, until I'm sure exactly what type it will be, should use the Fleeting template. - But I can also put notes in Inbox if I need to quickly, as long as I can sort through it by the end of day. - All note titles should have a space between the type indicator and the title. - Get rid of all unused links: `[link]()` since these also show up - It seems Daily notes will only be in the Graph view when they contain actual links to something. - I'm still unsure of whether or not it might make more sense to just keep most linking in the Related section rather than in the body copy. It likely only adds one link in Graph view, and it might make it easier to use later on. So for now just leave what I have in, but consider thinking about best practice for this. - I actually think in most cases, a lower-case alias is not needed in the [[⏶ YAML|YAML]] section, unless it's something I may use both ways. - just confirmed because I had a "yaml" option, but why would I ever need that? - Try to consolidate notes if possible - unless you find out otherwise this is bad. <hr class="references"> ### References [^1]: zettelkasten.de. *Getting Started* [Website](https://zettelkasten.de/posts/overview/) [^2]: zettelkasten.de. *Introduction*, [Website](https://zettelkasten.de/introduction/) [^3]: knowledgeworker.blog (2021). *How to take smart notes with Obsidian*, [Blog](https://www.knowledgeworker.blog/p/how-to-take-smart-notes-in-obsidian)
